Wire nets to reinforce unstable areas

A Solution to Address Instabilities at Their Source

The reinforcement and stabilization of rock instabilities using cable netting is an active technique that directly stabilizes at-risk rock masses. This method involves the simple confinement of rock masses through a cable net tensioned between a network of peripheral anchors.

Implementation Steps

  1. Installation of Peripheral Anchors:
    • Drilling and grouting of the anchors with a curing time of at least 48 hours to ensure proper bonding.
  2. Positioning and Tensioning of the Cable Net:
    • The net is tensioned between anchors using manual chain hoists.
    • Cable loops connect the ends of the net to the peripheral anchors.
    • To ensure optimal tension, a tensioning anchor is recommended approximately every 2 meters.
  3. Maintaining Tension:
    • Tension is secured using 3 to 4 cable clamps per loop.

Applications of Cable Netting

This technique is highly versatile and adaptable to various scenarios:

  1. Temporary Stabilization:
    • As a complementary measure to direct anchoring, cable nets provide temporary stabilization of rock masses before more extensive reinforcement works are performed.
  2. Permanent Reinforcement:
    • Cable nets can also be used as a standalone solution for the long-term stabilization of unstable rocks.
  3. Combination with Direct Anchors:
    • When used as a peripheral protection, cable nets enhance active reinforcement performed with direct anchors installed within the rock mass.

Advantages of Cable Netting Reinforcement

  • Versatility: Can be used independently or in combination with other stabilization techniques.
  • Durability: A reliable solution for long-term reinforcement of unstable rock masses.
  • Effectiveness: Ensures uniform tension, providing optimal stabilization and preventing movement of confined masses.
